Beer Can Tuesdays at Commodore Decatur Yacht Club is a fun social sailing activity for adult sailors of skill levels. All boat types are welcome and new sailing guests are encouraged to sign up to try sailing for free alongside CDYC members. Sailors typically arrive between 5:00-5:30pm to set up and launch sailboats. Please register at SailDecatur.org and check in at the pavilion upon arrival. First-time participants must sign a waiver and get set up in our system. We’ll meet in the pavilion at 5:45pm for boat assignments and further instructions. On-the-water fun begins at 6pm.

The format of Beer Can Tuesdays is (very) casual racing in the sailing area just off the dock in front of the sailing club. We will typically race 3-4 short 1-lap races and then enjoy grilled hot dogs or pizza and cold beverages in the pavilion at sunset. Donations for food are appreciated, but please bring your own beverages. Everyone gets to sail! If the number of sailors exceeds the number of available seats on sailboats, we’ll assign overflow sailors to the race committee boat and rotate sailors between races.  

Members and guests who cannot sail for any reason are welcome and encouraged to join us just before sunset in a pavilion for food and fun. If you are interested in taking a look and asking questions about sailing at CDYC, this is the perfect opportunity.  

What to Bring
(Life Jackets will be provided)

1. Skippers: VHF Radio (Channel 72)

2. First-timers: Crew Safety Certificate. Enter the free coupon code CDYCSAFETY.

3. Water bottle

4. Sunscreen, hat with brim, sunglasses

5. Splash jacket (we will sail in light rain)

6. Digital watch with countdown timer

7. Close-toed shoes that are no scuffing (tennis shoes work great)

Cost

• Free for new sailors to try!
• Regular sailors are expected to join CDYC as an Associate Member ($100/year)

Learn to Sail and Free Sailboat Rental

• Introduction to Sailing is an online course for CDYC members. A coupon code will be emailed to all new members shortly after joining the club.
• Tuesday regulars who complete the Introduction to Sailing online course will be invited to participate in beginner and intermediate learn to sail clinics and sign up for lessons.
• Get certified by Harbormaster John to check out club keelboats for free. Certified skippers are welcome to check out club keelboats anytime and take guests sailing. 

All participants must sign a waiver which will be provided at check-in. Crew Safety certificates are required for sailors who do not plan to sail on their own sailboat and recommended for all.
